Age of Steam Third Edition
Mayfair Games
Expected to arrive: TBD
Developed with updated color rules and beautiful new components, Age of Steam® Third Edition will deliver the ultimate railway game experience. Martin designed the new rules to make the game more approachable for beginners and casual gamers. Advanced rules for expert players will satisfy railway game enthusiasts looking for a more complex and challenging game. Martin notes that the new game: “…is just as challenging as the original, but plays in a shorter time and is much more welcoming to new players…” Age of Steam® Third Edition will be fully compatible with earlier expansions, so owners of these products can still use all of their old maps. Old maps fit right on top of the new board. You won’t obscure the information and displays used in the third edition, for they appear around the edge of the new, larger game board. Improved components include double-sided track tiles and complete sets of track with printed town symbols, so no more town discs are required. The game will include two maps. One covers the northeastern U.S. and part of southeastern Canada and is suitable for three to four players. The other map covers Germany’s Ruhr Valley, the area around Essen. It’s suitable for four to five players. You’ll see that we’ve replaced the random introduction of new goods cubes with a new (basic and advanced rules) action called “City Growth.” Revised income reduction will smooth game play. To keep every game competitive, game leaders face increased maintenance costs and greater penalties for borrowing money. We’ll make all the rules available for download on our website with the release of the game. Mayfair Games will also be releasing guidelines for creating your own expansion maps. We hope to encourage third-party expansions by allowing the use of a “Seal of Approval.” We’ll invite prospective publishers of Age of Steam® expansions to contact Mayfair Games for our Seal of Approval guidelines.

Agricola
Z-Man Games
Expected to arrive: June/July 2008
In Agricola (Latin for "farmer"), you're a farmer in a wooden shack with your spouse and little else. On a turn, you get to take only two actions, one for you and one for the spouse, from all the possibilities you'll find on a farm: collecting clay, wood or stone; building fences; and so on. You might think about having kids in order to get more work accomplished, but first you need to expand your house. And what are you going to feed all the little rugrats? Agricola is a turn-based game. There are 14 game turns plus 6 harvest phases (after turn 4, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 14). Each player starts with two playing tokens (farmer and wife) and thus can take two actions per turn. There are multiple options, and while the game progresses, you'll have more and more: first thing in a turn, a new action card is flipped over. Problem: Each action can be taken just once per turn, so it's important to do some things with high preference. Each player also starts with a hand of 7 Occupation cards (of more than 160 total) and 7 Minor Improvement cards (of more than 140 total) that he may use during the game if they fit in his/her strategy. This amounts to countless strategies, some depending on your card hand. Sometimes it's a good choice to stay on course, sometimes you better react on what your opponents do. Agricola can also be played without cards (family game) and can even be played solo.

Anno Domini (Inventions)
Valley Games, Inc
Expected to arrive:
Urs Hostettler's party game of creating an accurate timeline is now being printed in English. Originally released as Anno Domini, this game has been a HUGE success in Germany. In Anno Domini, players in turn place a card on the table, *trying* to put theirs in chronological order. A player may, instead of adding a card, claim that the order in which the cards were put is incorrect. In this case all cards are turned over and the correct years revealed. If the order was correct then the doubting player receives two cards and skips a turn. If the order was incorrect then the previous player, who thought the order as correct, receives three cards. The first player that gets rid of all their cards wins. Bluffing is just as important as knowledge in this game. Most events are rather obscure or are hard to date exactly, so this ain’t no game for the nerds/geeks of this world. Anno Domini is an excellent social game and you may even learn something. First player to empty his hand wins.

Barren Victory II: The Battle of Chickamauga
Multiman Publishing
Expected to arrive:
The return of a classic. The time for maneuver is past. For weeks, Union and Confederate armies have played cat and mouse in the mountains of North Georgia, vying for the prize of Chattanooga. Union Major General William S. Rosecrans’ Army of the Cumberland feinted north, swung south, and leveraged the Confederate Army of Tennessee, with General Braxton Bragg at its head, out of the city. But Bragg is not yet defeated. Rosecrans, sure of success, has divided his forces and plunged headlong into pursuing a beaten foe, intent on catching the enemy before he retires behind the next mountain range and has to be out-maneuvered all over again. Within Rosecrans’ dispositions, Bragg has seen the seeds of his own dazzling opportunity. If the Confederates can turn and strike before Rosecrans can gather in his own scattered troops, Rebel fortunes can yet be redeemed. In 1991, the Gamers released Barren Victory, a brigade level game that examined the hard-fought battle in Georgia. With two maps, the game covered three days of action, from September 18-20, 1863: full coverage of the battle that locked 130,000 men in combat and left 35,000 of them casualties. In 2007, we return to that battle. Barren Victory II is a complete re-design of the original game: new graphics, new order of battle, an expanded map area, and most importantly, a host of new scenarios. We incorporate the optional forces that appear in our regimental treatment of this titanic battle: This Terrible Sound. In addition to expanding the campaign coverage to include actions from September 17th to the 21st (Could Bragg have struck earlier? Were the Rebels remiss in not pursuing immediately on the 21st?) the new map space allows us to examine one of the campaign’s important might-have-beens: Lieutenant General Leonidas Polk’s “lost opportunity” to strike at a lone Union Corps near Lee & Gordon’s Mill on September 13th and 14th, 1863. As befits a deluxe version of this great game, Multi-Man Publishing will be going all out to make the quality of the components match the quality of the history and game play. Including in the box will be 4 maps to cover the entire field of battle, 528 5/8ths inch counters and a full color rulebook. As the 16th game in the very successful Civil War Brigade series, old vets of the game system will not be forgotten. The game will be fully playable with the current CWB series rules plus a small Exclusive Rules booklet as any other Civil War Brigade series game can be – or, you can use the new and updated rules set created by Adam Starkweather and David Powell that covers the unique aspects of the battle of Chickamauga more comprehensively. You can choose how you wish to play the game. Take a look at the map here! For the time and space challenged, you too haven’t been forgotten. Backprinted on two of the maps will be the old Barren Victory game battlefield. Gamers will be able to play the most dramatic moments of this great battle with a game footprint that matches the first version of the game. Lastly, as an added bonus, Brent Easton will be providing his talents as a VASSAL programmer to make the computer aid to this project second to none. We at IGS hope this is just the beginning of a wonderful partnership with The Gamers and look forward to much more excitement in the future.

Extrablatt
Valley Games, Inc
Expected to arrive:
Karl-Heinz Schmiel’s fast paced game Extrablatt will now be available in an international version as Special Edition. This edition will have all new hilarious headlines in English, French, German, Dutch, Italian and Spanish and all new artwork by Mike Doyle. In Special Edition, players take on the role of editors of a major newspaper, choosing stories of various general types (politics, sports, entertainment, etc.) to run in their respective newspapers. Hilarious headlines stream in on the fax machine and it is up to you to decide which ones to run with. How big should the article be? Is it worthy of the front page? Will competing newspapers run the same article? Should you place an advertisement in your competitor’s paper to take up valuable space? While making these decisions, the clock is running! The print deadline is drawing near and you have to get your finished paper done in time for printing. Will your newspaper have the largest circulation? Two factors determine a story's worth: timing and size. The timing is relevant because the later in the game the story is run the more points it's potentially worth. Galaxy Trucker
Rio Grande Games
Expected to arrive: February 2007
Corporation Incorporated is an interplanetary construction fi rm that builds sewer systems and low-income housing on the less-developed planets of the Galaxy. For years, Corp Inc. has tottered on the brink of bankruptcy: transporting building materials to the edge of the Galaxy, where the need for their services is greatest, is a risky business. The company was saved by a few visionaries on the board of directors. Instead of shipping materials to the Periphery, they reasoned, why not build the materials into spacecraft and let them ship themselves? Furthermore, why hire pilots if there are nut-cases who will do it for free? That’s where you come in. Just sign the contract, and you gain unrestricted access to a Corp Inc. Warehouse. Build your own space ship from the available prefabricated components, and fl y it to the Periphery. Of course, you may have to eat a loss, but any profi ts you make along the way are yours to keep, and Corporation Incorporated will pay you a bonus for quick delivery. It’s possible that you will end up with an insurmountable debt and fi nish your days panhandling on the streets of Deneb III, but if Lady Luck should smile upon you, you just might find yourself among the 10 billion richest people in the Galaxy!

Habitat
Valley Games, Inc
Expected to arrive:
In Habitat, your goal is to attract the most complex and diverse animal life to your portion of the great North Woods. The most vibrant ecosystems are those that have organisms from all levels of life, from the producers up to the dominant predators. Therefore, to win a game of Habitat, a player must create a complete collection of cards ranked 1-8. Cards are stacked in order of rank, from lowest to highest, to form Food Chains. There may be multiple Food Chains and duplicate ranks, but only one card from each rank is needed to win. By contrast, an unsupported chain of cards carries the risk that creatures become hungry—or even begin to starve! Ilium
Playroom Entertainment
Expected to arrive: Fall 2008
Ilium is another term for ancient Troy, and players are archeologists following in the footsteps of Heinrich Schliemann, looking for artifacts in the newly excavated site of that fabled city. The board and game play might remind you of Portobello Market, the first strategy game of this style from Playroom. The board shows a number of dig sites, with paths of different lengths connecting the sites. To start the game, you place a number of discovery tiles on each site equal to the number of paths leading to it. The tiles show one of five types of artifacts, with 1-5 artifacts on a tile. Each player has his own deck of cards, and the card you draw each turn determines how many archeologists (1-3) you place on one empty space on any path. When a path fills, the player with the most archaeologists on the path collects one tile from one of the adjacent dig sites – but in each site he may choose only the tile with the fewest artifacts; the player with the secondmost artifacts takes the tile that the first player didn’t. As the dig sites empty, the more valuable tiles can be claimed. The game ends after all five tiles with five artifacts on them have been claimed. Each player was dealt a secret card at the start of the game representing one of the types of artifacts, and players must now discard the tile of that type that contains the most artifacts. The player who ends up with the most complete sets wins the game.

Liberte

Player’s fortunes rise and fall along with the groups that they choose to support. Clever (or devious) players might even decide to support different sides at the same time to help ensure their victory! In a time of trouble, any tactic may be considered acceptable, including sending rivals to face the guillotine. Just be certain that your characters aren’t the next to be eliminated! Speaking of characters, Liberte features an entire cast! From Marat to Robespierre, from Danton to Desmoulins, Liberte allows each player the chance to determine the fate of every major player in the French Revolution. Some will hold sway over the masses, and others will meet their fate at the hands of the Radicals. Liberte is played in four turns. In each turn there will be a variable number of rounds in which each player increases influence in one of three factions: the Royalists, the Moderates, and the Radicals. After each turn, an election will be held to determine which of the three groups forms the government. The player that best uses their characters to win election seats will find themselves one step closer to victory. The Valley Games reprint of Liberte features beautiful new artwork, new player boards, and upgraded rules resulting from thousands of plays from Liberte’s legions of fans. Middle-Earth Quest
Fantasy Flight Games
Expected to arrive: Fall 2008
“Middle Earth is really the Holy Grail of fantasy settings, and we’re always happy to be allowed to contribute to it.” Christian T. Petersen, CEO and founder of Fantasy Flight Games. Thematically, Middle Earth Quest will take place approximately ten years after Bilbo Baggins leaves the Shire, and several years before Frodo leaves Bag End on his journey leading to the destruction of the One Ring. Thus, Middle Earth Quest will take place in a time of growing darkness. “Players will meet and interact with characters from the saga, but not be constrained by having to follow a major character’s path,” explained Petersen. Rather than taking the role of a major character, whose destiny will be tied up in ring saga, players will take control of characters such as, for example, a rare adventurous Hobbit, a Gondorian Captain, a Rider from the Westfold, or numerous other character types. Not only will characters be able to experience new adventure in Middle Earth, but we will carefully seek to tie in the experience with the massive amounts of lore and story that takes place around the edges of the central THE LORD OF THE RINGS storyline.

Municipium
Valley Games, Inc
Expected to arrive: July 2008
Reiner Knizia’s newest big box game, Municipium. This is classic Knizia at his finest! A prime mechanism of Roman expansion and control in the provinces (and in Italy during the conquest of the peninsula c. 500 – 265 BC) was the municipium (later the colonia), the premiere Roman provincial town. The game takes place in one of these municipalities. Players are each in control of a powerful family and try to strategically place their family members in the various institutions throughout the municipium and gain the support of the citizens; Scholars, Merchants, Soldiers, Priests and possibly even the Praefect. At various times in the game, if a player has the most influence in an institution, the player can exert the power of that institution and gain the support of certain citizens. Meanwhile, the preafect moves around the municipium and players strive to have the most influence in the institution that he visits, thereby earning his favour. There are seven institutions; Temple, Baths, Emporium, Praetorium, Tavern, Basilica and Forum, each of which have their unique powers with which players must decide how and when to use in an attempt to become the most influential family in the municipium. Complete artwork by Mike Doyle.

NAQ?
NAQ Games
Expected to arrive:
NAQ, pronounced "Knack", is the FUN and EASY game where you play the players. NAQ is unlike themed board games, which usually leave one or two players feeling left out because they lack enthusiasm or knowledge for the particular theme. In NAQ, the theme is the players and their unique knowledge and interests. This one-of-a-kind game experience allows you to mix players of any age or background with everyone having an equal chance of winning! NAQ is a groundbreaking Player Interactive game that is simple, strategic and extremely innovative. Most of the time you’re trying to answer a general knowledge question that another player has created. Every five minutes or so it will be your turn to try and do the NAQ. Doing the NAQ is when you make up a question and try to get only half the players to answer correctly. Basically, you’re trying to stump half your friends or family, but not all of them….and it’s Super Easy to think of a question because each player is given a Subject Card before the game begins which includes 24 different categories to help stimulate questions. It’s amazing how FUN and EASY it is to think of a question, especially after the game begins. Players can ask a question about anything they want as long as it’s considered a general knowledge question. Players can also feed off other players' questions during the game. Let's say a player asks "Who sang the theme song for the movie Titanic?". When your turn comes around, you might ask "Who was the leading actor in the movie Titanic?" or "What year did the Titanic sink?" or "In which ocean did the Titanic sink?" The possibilities are endless! Most players end up having several questions left over at the end of the game that they can always save for their next NAQ game! NAQ is a timeless game that will last forever. Every game is different and fresh, because there are no pre-written, outdated or repeat questions. Whether it’s your turn or not, you’re always involved in the action!

Ramparts
Cafe Games
Expected to arrive:
(from the publisher) Rudi Hoffmann’s inspiration for RAMPARTS came from the great medieval towers of San Gimignano built in the Tuscany region of Italy. Now known as “The Manhattan of the Middle Ages,” San Gimignano was home to 72 large towers during the 12th and 13th Centuries, only 15 of which remain standing today. These towers were originally built to offer powerful families protection from gangs and competing families of the aristocracy. However, over time, the towers became symbols of status, prestige and power, so much so that it was decreed that none may be built exceeding the height of the City Hall. Rudi Hoffmann’s RAMPARTS recreates this era by allowing you to participate in a tower-building competition against one to three other nobles. Your goal is to stack tiles bearing various coats of arms (symbols of aristocracy) into tall towers and maneuver them into the most prestigious districts in town. However, you must be careful with the towers’ construction - just as in the San Gimignano of old, your towers are not allowed to grow too high, and only the family with a coat of arms in their color on top of the tower will earn prestige. The noble who has built the most impressive collection of towers at the end of the game wins!

Reins of Power
Fantasy Flight Games
Expected to arrive: 2008
"Reins of Power" is a game of near-future global supremacy where players wear two hats: they act as the leader of an existing world power (such as the US, EU, China) but the also act as domestic opponent to an opposing player. In this second role players will inhibit their opponents actions from the inside-out, like a political rival stepping in the way, or like Greenpeace driving a boat through an offshore oil derrick. The game's tension points probably won't be battles, but global hotspot outbreaks like famine and terrorism. Quite the interesting dynamic, and a perfect topic for these modern days.

Republic of Rome
Valley Games, Inc
Expected to arrive: February 2008
Robert Haines’ and Richard Berthold’s classic game of political intrigue and diplomacy is back in full form! Republic of Rome is a distillation of 250 years of Roman history, from about 265 B.C., all in one evening! In Republic of Rome, players are in a constant balancing act between personal advancement and the welfare of the state. Players build the empire from scratch and thus develop and change the political environment in which they are competing. Players’ Senators vie for political power, military commands and economic advantages against the backdrop of a turbulent world. Deals and counter-offers abound. Short the necessary votes for Consul? Trade the Armaments Concession for a faction’s support. Spartacus has destroyed your villa? Send Pompey off with ten legions to crush him. But is that too much power to entrust to one man? What if Pompey rebels and marches on Rome? The game contains three scenarios which divide the color-coded cards into decks simulating the Early, Middle, and Late Republic. Those wishing a larger game can combine them into a Campaign Game of truly epic proportions. A solitaire and two-player version are also included for those unable to muster more players. This new version contains all new artwork by Mike Doyle and re-written rules meant to address and clarify all previous errata.

Be careful not to load the Camel too close to its limit, though. If your card breaks the Camel's back, you lose! But if you can break the Camel's back with the Straw card, you win!

Such A Thing
Valley Games, Inc
Expected to arrive: 2008
Urs Hostettler's party game of creating some "thing" is now being printed in English. Originally released as Ein Solches Ding, this game has been a HUGE success in Germany. Such A Thing is a game where players have to think of a thing that fits a number of given characteristics. Players in turn add cards from their hand one by one, until one player doubts there is "such a thing" that matches all the cards currently played. If the previous player can name a REASONABLE thing, the doubting player is penalized with 3 extra cards. If there isn't such a thing, the previous player is penalized 3 cards. Characteristics such as "heavier than a boot", "is useless once used" and "breaks when left in the freezer" are just some examples of what players have to work with to create "such a thing". First player to empty his hand wins.
